Wood Building

So after a few hours of gluing and cutting, I have a block of wood that is starting to look like my design.

However a small problem has occurred. I noticed the base was slightly uneven, to I tried to saw the entire base a single level.  This was nearly impossible to accomplish with the band saw and I nearly cut the resting base in half.  I can either glue on another piece of wood to match what I removed, or I can use the opportunity to think of something different.

Paper Models

So using the new trophy concept as an idea here are a few model concepts.

These first three are a very simple idea.  Using the bottom base to hold my piece of floorboard, the upper portion attempts to mimic the NCAA championship trophy.  I think my idea might evolve with the upper portion narrowing out towards it's higher parts.  The hole in the center ideally would go through the entire design. I didn't attempt to include the complete hollow in the paper model to retain some strength for the model.

The second model uses a similar base to hold the floorboard piece, but instead of mimicking the NCAA trophy it attempts to create a rounded basketball image.  I think the trophy concept is a stronger idea, but I felt this idea needed to be visualized.

Shifting Designs

After discussing my concept with a group I received a lot of really good feedback.  The most IMPORTANT aspect of my "box" was lost on me.  Whereas I was far more focused on the piece of floorboard because my name was carved on it, other people were more focused on the culture of the where the wood was from.

I thought of it being my name carved in wood, others it was a piece of culture that happened to have my name in it.

The more I thought about the idea the more I realized that a stronger design will connect to a social, cultural, aspect.  Though I lament losing any sense of usefulness I need to alter my basic concepts.

I started by thinking of sports trophies of various shapes and styles, and began looking for images that might inspire new ideas.

These are a few images that meshed with my new direction.

Band Saw Experimenting

Though these cuts are just simple curved cuts, they are a starting point for my later band saw box.

Enjoy

I Found This Online

Though not important for any design projects, I NEED to save this image.

Wood Project Research

I took some time to do a bit of research towards a woodworking project. These photos are some of the best ideas that I found online.
